This time is always very hectic. School is starting back. Students have new teachers, which means new routines and expectations.
Having good study habits and a routine will make a difference in your student’s success and your stress level.
Here are some of my tips:
1. Have a regular time to tackle homework.
2. Make a designated place for study. It needs to be quiet and free of distraction.
3. Make a nightly routine for parents to check over homework.
4. Check your child’s backpack each night. Put it on your “routine” list along with brushing your teeth and charging your cell phone.
5. Have a designated place for backpacks and shoes. When we lived in Korea, shoes were at the door. When I came back to the states, I bought some baskets for the shoes that is right by the front door. I seldom ever have to look for shoes.
6. Lay out school clothes the night before. It will only take about 10 extra minutes.
7. Make a plan of assigning outfits and lunch menus on Sunday. It will alleviate arguments during the week.
8. Keep in touch with your child’s teacher. You are not going to “love” every teacher. However, good communication will alleviate a lot of stress in the upcoming school year.
9. Let older children help younger children. This instills a “serving” heart.
10. Have fun! Schedule a little fun each day. Don’t let days go by without having daily interaction with your child.
I know that life can be incredibly hectic and stressful. However, there are ways we can alleviate some of the stress by organizing and keeping a routine. We will then be teaching our children to establish routines in their lives later on.
