New Year!

Most children are heading back to school this week.

People are making goals and resolutions.

Many are going back to work after the New Year’s holiday.

It is a great time to set personal, business, and educational goals. Make some goals with your children. This can set them up for continued success in 2022.

What are some of your goals for 2022?

Making the Most of the Holiday

I can remember holidays as a child. It usually meant no school and no homework.

Now that I look back, I can see where I wasted so much time.

What can you do to help yourself (or your student) retain the information they learned from school during the holidays?

Take advantage of tutoring or visit Outschool.com. I can make classes for any need you have.

Don’t miss out on learning during the holidays.

The Time is Now……

We are now passed the first half of the first semester of the school year. Children probably have received progress reports for each subject at school.

It is best to be proactive with a child’s education. A lot of children have fallen behind in their studies. Many of these children will need one on one help to “catch up”.

Here are some of the areas where children are struggling:

  • reading skills
  • math skills
  • confidence
  • social skills
  • writing skills
  • mental health issues

It is wise to be proactive and help your child find areas that need more work early on. It is not wise to wait until your child has an assessment or test.

Families Learning Together

When families learn together, children grow up knowing that learning never ends. My husband and I are constantly learning, reading, and gaining new knowledge.

Students who become “lovers of learning” can create a habit early of regular reading, listening to podcasts, and learn mindset strategies that can help them succeed in any stage of life.

I try to teach my students to never stop learning. No human will ever learn everything on this earth. Even the people with the highest IQ will tell you that learning is a lifelong journey.

Be involved in your children’s education. Listen to podcasts. Read often. Learn continuously. Your family will thank you.

It’s Fall Ya’ll!

It is all things Fall now! We just passed the first day of Autumn. My students in China just celebrated Mid Autumn Festival, while my friends and students in Korea celebrated Chuseok.

What is on your checklist for this fall? Are you planning to go to a pumpkin patch with the kids? Will you try apple picking at a farm?

Make sure your child’s educational goals are on that list. If they need extra help, get it now before they fall behind.

Back to School Tips

Yesterday was Labor Day, which often is associated with the end of summer. Most schools are back in session, whether it is virtually, in person, or hybrid (a little of both).

Here are some tips to help you establish routine and have less stress with school!

Family Dinner Topics

The family meal has become a lost art. Most families are too busy to eat together even once a week.

Here is a challenge. Have your family eat together at least 3 times a week. Use these topics to help you have a great family conversation.

This is great practice for families learning English. Make it a game! The first person who does not speak in English is the loser and has to wash dishes!

Family Dinner Topic Session #1

  1. What is one good thing that happened today?
  2. What is one bad (or not so good) thing that happened today?
  3. If you could do anything different tomorrow, what would you do?
  4. What is one goal you have for this week?

Check back next week for another post with other family dinner topics!

The Back to School Stress

Everyone feels some anxiety and stress when children start back to school. I can remember feeling stressed when I was going back to school as a teacher. I also remember calling all my parents at the first of the year to introduce myself.

However, times are different now. I now homeschool my children. I know that with the pandemic, times are totally different. I cannot imagine the pressure teachers and students are under during this time. People thought things would be back to normal. Now we have the Delta Variant and now a “Lambda”.

I also was in a different situation a few years ago:

I was in a foreign country with my family because of my husband’s job. I was learning a new language. I saw so many children who were struggling with learning English, a new culture and a new home.

I love to help families dealing with this new adventure in English speaking countries.

Living in a Foreign Country

Are you living in an English speaking country because of your job? It can be a huge transition, not only for you, but for your family.

I know from personal experience how difficult it can be.

My husband had to move to South Korea for a project with his job. He was going to be gone for two to three years. I did not like the fact that our family might be separated for that long. So, we moved to South Korea with him.

This experience as a foreigner in a different country was both one of the scariest and the most exciting of my life.

This picture is of our two sons the morning we flew out to South Korea. Here are some facts.

  • I had never flown before. The boys had never flown before.
  • My youngest son had just been diagnosed on the autism spectrum just four months before this.
  • My children were going to a new school, new country and new culture.
  • I had no idea what I was going to experience.

My experience turned out to be one of the most awesome times of our lives. However, there were many frustrating days.

You may be in the same situation living in the United States, the UK, Australia, Canada or any other English speaking country.

I took Korean classes while we were in South Korea. I understand the frustration of learning a new language. I volunteered at the international school where my children attended. I saw the desperation and anxiety students had when they were learning a new language.

Let me help your child gain the English skills they need to excel in their education. They are getting so much more experience now by living in a foreign country. The less anxiety they have about school, the more they can enjoy the experience.

Which is Better? Outschool or Private Tutoring

I get this question a lot from friends and potential clients. Which is better? Is Outschool better for my student? Or is private tutoring the answer?

This really depends on the student and the tutor. Outschool provides both private tutoring, ongoing classes, camps, and one time classes. However, you may want to go the private tutor route because it builds a more personal relationship with the tutor.

If you think your child would not need long term help, Outschool is your answer. You can pick and choose the courses for your student.

With my private students, I personalize every session. I like to work on whatever the student is learning in class at that present time. I don’t want them to be distracted by additional material. When it is getting close to state testing, I concentrate on reviewing that material.
